Insulation questions, answered plainly

If you can see the tops of the ceiling joists, you are under R-19 and the attic is costing you money. Other signs: rooms that never get comfortable, ice on the roof melting in patches, and a furnace that runs and runs. We check depth in a few minutes and show you photos.

For most homes the installed price for blown in attic insulation lands between $1.50 and $3.00 per square foot before rebates. A typical 1,200 square foot attic is usually $1,800 to $3,600. Removal, air sealing and a very low roof pitch add to that. See our pricing guide for the full breakdown.

Yes. As of January 2026 the attic incentive is $1.25 per square foot for owner occupied homes going from R-18 or less to R-38 or more, and $1.50 per square foot for rentals. Walls and floors have their own rates. We handle the paperwork.

Both work when installed to the right depth. We lean to dense blown cellulose in attics because it settles into gaps, resists air movement, and carries a higher R-value per inch. Fiberglass makes sense where moisture or weight is a concern. We will tell you which one fits your house and why.

Only when it needs to go. Wet, moldy, rodent damaged or vermiculite insulation comes out. Clean, dry, thin insulation can usually be topped over. Removal is a separate line on the quote so you can see exactly what it costs.

Most attic installs are finished in one working day. Removal plus reinstall is usually two. Crawl spaces and wall dense pack depend on access, and we give you the schedule in writing before we start.

R-value measures resistance to heat flow. Higher is better. Blown cellulose is about R-3.5 per inch, so R-49 is roughly 14 inches. The number on your quote is the installed, settled value.

For the inspection, yes, so we can walk you through what we find. For the install, someone needs to let us in and we will walk the plan with them. After that you are free to leave.

We remove the contaminated insulation, sanitize, and can seal the entry points we find. If there is an active infestation we will recommend a pest control visit before we reinstall, so the problem does not come back into fresh insulation.

Yes. An attic can hit 130 degrees in July and that heat pushes down through a thin ceiling. Insulating to R-49 cuts the cooling load the same way it cuts the heating load.

Garage ceilings under living space and garage walls shared with the house are worth insulating. Detached garages and shops are usually a spray foam or batt job.
